Xiaomi’s wide foldable promises more power than Samsung’s

Image
Xiaomi is the latest manufacturer to release a short, wide foldable phone, in the same week Apple is expected to do the same . I got to try the 18 Fold behind closed doors at IFA last week, and while it looks and feels similar enough to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 , superior specs make it feel like the phone I wish Samsung had made. The 18 Fold is Xiaomi's first book-style foldable since 2024's Mix Fold 4 , but the company has followed Huawei and Samsung in moving to a short, squat design. Xiaomi's phone goes further though: it's both shorter and wider than Samsung's, with a roughly 1.4:1 aspect ratio on both the 7.58-inch inner and 5.38-inch ou … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/tech/991008/xiaomi-18-fold-hands-on-impressions-specs-wide

First Xiaomi, then the world: why Arm might give phone gaming a huge graphics boost

Image
The Xiaomi 18 Fold and its Xring O3 chip. China is getting first crack at a British technology that might change how mobile games are made and played. Today, the Xiaomi 18 Fold launches in mainland China with an Arm Mali G2-Ultra NX graphics processor inside its custom Xring O3 chip . What's so special about that? After five years of development, Arm now has an AI gaming graphics accelerator inside its GPU. By following Nvidia's playbook, Arm-powered phones are about to have PC-like technologies to make games run faster, at higher resolution, with advanced lighting techniques, all without using more power than they do today. The jagged edges you see in the mobile versions of popular … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/games/990676/arm-neural-rendering-mali-g2-ultra-xiaomi-xring-o3

Audi’s new A2 E-tron is its most affordable and efficient EV yet

Image
When shopping for an electric vehicle, affordability is becoming a more common trait. But affordable and energy efficient is truly a rare breed. Often you have to sacrifice one for the other. Want something affordable? Great, here's a range loser. Want something that goes the distance? Be ready to pay the price. Surprisingly, here comes Audi to split the difference. The German automaker's new A2 E-tron compact crossover is inexpensive, starting at just £32,200 (about $45,000). And it absolutely impresses with an ultra low drag coefficient and a range of battery and drivetrain options that, when configured correctly, can produce a range of … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/transportation/991081/audi-a2-etron-ev-specs-price

Image
The XM4C (in white) have the exact same visual design as the XM4 (in black) from 2020. | Photo: John Higgins / The Verge Six years ago Sony and Bose were in the middle of a noise-canceling battle, with each new model of headphones better than the last. In the fall of 2020, Sony released the WH-1000XM4 headphones to wide acclaim. They sat atop best headphones lists for years, thanks to their great sound, competitive ANC, and compact size, until they went out of stock. Now Sony has brought them back, with minor improvements, as the WH-1000XM4C. The XM4C look identical to the original XM4 (although they now have a lavender option), with the same hinge design and ability to fold up. It's a compact design that Sony moved away from when it released the XM5 in 2022 , … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/tech/990687/sony-announces-xm4c-headphones

(Photo by Samuel Boivin/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images The Seattle Times and Newsday are just the latest plaintiffs to take OpenAI to court, alleging copyright infringement . The two outlets say the company used their journalism as training data for its AI models without permission and often reproduces passages from their reporting in response to user queries. This is similar to lawsuits filed by The New York Times , Ziff Davis , Merriam-Webster, and Encyclopedia Britannica against OpenAI. The Seattle Times and Newsday also named Microsoft as a defendant in the suit, since Copilot is built on OpenAI's technology. The publishers join a list of nearly 400 local newspapers that recent...
