You can’t trust your eyes to tell you what’s real anymore, says the head of Instagram

Image
Instagram boss Adam Mosseri is closing out 2025 with a 20-images-deep dive into what a new era of "infinite synthetic content" means as it all becomes harder and harder to distinguish from reality, and the old, more personal Instagram feed that he says has been "dead" for years. Last year, The Verge's Sarah Jeong wrote that "…the default assumption about a photo is about to become that it's faked, because creating realistic and believable fake photos is now trivial to do," and Mosseri eventually concurs: For most of my life I could safely assume photographs or videos were largely accurate captures of moments that happened. This is clearly … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/news/852124/adam-mosseri-ai-images-video-instagram

The 11 best Nintendo Switch 2 games we played in 2025

2025 was a big year for gaming, and that includes gaming hardware. Nintendo launched its Switch 2 console in June, and since then, numerous Switch 2 titles and noteworthy updates for original Switch games have launched. These include brand-new Nintendo experiences like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza , as well as some belated but welcome third-party titles, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 . Even classics like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild got some new life on the upgraded console. If you're considering buying a console, or you're getting one for someone else, there are 11 games that we think are a must … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/games/845401/nintendo-switch-2-best-games

Two cybersecurity employees plead guilty to carrying out ransomware attacks

Image
Two former employees at cybersecurity firms - one of whom was a ransomware negotiator - have pleaded guilty to carrying out a series of ransomware attacks in 2023. The Department of Justice announced the guilty pleas on Tuesday, saying 40-year-old Ryan Goldberg and 36-year-old Kevin Martin extorted $1.2 million in Bitcoin from a medical device company and targeted several others. Goldberg, Martin, and an unnamed co-conspirator were indicted for the attacks in October , which involved using ALPHV / BlackCat ransomware to encrypt and steal data from their victims. As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times , Martin and the third conspirator worked as … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/news/851467/cybersecurity-employees-plead-guilty-alphv-blackcat-ransomware

The OneXSugar Wallet is the first gaming handheld with a folding screen

Image
Folding OLED displays are still most commonly found on premium smartphones and laptops , but One-Netbook is bringing the tech to a new gaming device. Its new OneXSugar Wallet is reminiscent of the company's folding OneXSugar Sugar 1 handheld that launched earlier this year. But instead of two screens, the Wallet handheld unfolds to reveal just one big 8.01-inch OLED screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio, as spotted by Retro Handhelds . The OneXSugar Wallet was announced on China's Weibo yesterday , but with few details about its features and capabilities. That folding OLED screen has a resolution of 2,480×1,860 pixels, and the handheld will be powere … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/news/851401/one-netbook-onexsugar-gaming-handheld-wallet-folding-oled-screen-android

GameSir put a tiny force feedback steering wheel on its new Swift Drive controller

Image
GameSir is no stranger to experimenting with unique controller features - its Tarantula Pro can automatically swap its face button labels to accommodate alternate layouts, and its Pocket 1 clamps Game Boy controls onto your phone. What sets its new Swift Drive controller apart is a small steering wheel located smack-dab in the middle of the gamepad that's connected to what GameSir calls the "world's smallest direct drive motor" providing force feedback effects for racing games. Pricing and availability hasn't been announced yet, but GameSir has revealed plenty of details about the Swift Drive's features and functionality. GOG’s Steam-alternative PC game store is leaving CD Projekt, staying DRM-free

Image
GOG is splitting from CD Projekt, the game company that launched the preservation-focused PC gaming marketplace in 2008. In an update on Monday , GOG announced that its co-founder, MichaÅ‚ KiciÅ„ski, has acquired the digital storefront and its online gaming platform GOG Galaxy from CD Projekt - which he also co-founded - for $25.2 million. The acquisition isn't changing anything about GOG's mission to keep games DRM-free, according to the announcement that says it's "more central to GOG than ever:" GOG has always been built on strong values and clear principles. Turn your PC into a Super Nintendo with Epilogue’s new USB dock

Image
After announcing and teasing its design well over a year ago, Epilogue's new SN Operator will finally be available for preorder starting tomorrow . Like the company's GB Operator that debuted in early 2021, the SN Operator is a standalone USB cartridge slot that lets you play and archive old Nintendo console games on PCs, Macs, or handhelds like the Steam Deck using their original carts. But where the GB Operator was built for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and GBA games, the SN Operator instead supports any Super Nintendo and Super Famicom game. Preorders for the SN Operator will open at 12PM ET on December 30th for $59.99. Beats’ new Powerbeats Fit earbuds are down to $180

Image
It’s almost the new year and time to treat yourself to a new pair of earbuds — especially if one of your resolutions for 2026 is to work out more. If you find yourself reading this and nodding, take a look at the Beats Powerbeats Fit , a recent upgrade of Beats’ Fit Pro earbuds that feature a redesigned wing tip. They are now on sale at Amazon , Best Buy , and B&H for about $179.99, which is $20 off their usual $199.99 price and the lowest they’ve gone so far. According to the company, the new tips have more flexibility in order to improve comfort while keeping the earbuds more securely anchored in your ears. While these mid-level earbuds still use the H1 chips (the Powerbeats Pro 2 and the AirPods Pro 3 are equipped with Apple’s newer H2 wireless chip), they have most of the features you’d look for, whether you’re using them with an iPhone (hands-free Siri access, Find My tracking, and syncing across Apple devices through iCloud) or an Android phone (one-touch pairing and lo...

LG announces new UltraGear evo gaming monitors with AI upscaling

The terrible Nintendo controller that helped make VR happen

Image
The Nintendo Power Glove was not good. It's important that you know that. The Power Glove was ambitious, impressive, even important - one of the very first mainstream devices that let you control a game using your body instead of just your thumbs - but it was not good. In some ways, its not-good-ness is a key part of the story. The Power Glove showed up in the late 1980s, at a complicated time for the gaming industry, when Nintendo was a hugely powerful force for the future of fun. But the Power Glove wasn't really even a Nintendo product. It started as a research lark, became a toy, and only wound up with Nintendo's name on it after a part … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/podcast/850556/nintendo-power-glove-version-history

Ubisoft shuts down ‘Rainbow Six Siege’ servers following hack

Image
Yesterday, Ubisoft confirmed that Rainbow Six Siege had been compromised and that it had shut down the game's servers and marketplace while it resolved the issue. The hackers managed to gain control over a significant chunk of the game's systems, including the ability to ban and unban users, sending custom messages to ban ticker, unlocking all in-game items, and granting every player 2 billion R6 Credits and Renown. Ubisoft sells R6 credits in its store, pricing 15,000 of them at $99.99. That means the actual cash value of 2 billion R6 credits is about $13.33 million. The best PS5 games from 2025

Image
In this new era of console… inclusivity ? driven by Sony and mostly Microsoft bringing their exclusives to other platforms, it's getting harder to highlight games that make a singular console shine. Indeed, the top-performing games year after year on both PlayStation and Xbox are multiplatform releases, and often the best games of the year, like 2025 GOTY winner Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 , similarly launch on most everything . (Once again, like in all things, Nintendo is the exception.) But while lists like this will probably disappear as we get deeper into the era of everything being an Xbox, Sony still seems committed to high-quality exclu … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/games/846828/ps5-best-games-2025

Two new wireless Samsung speakers for 2026 lean into aesthetics

Image
For years, Samsung has made products that try to camouflage what they are by displaying works of art. The Frame TV is the most famous example, but the company also released the Music Frame , a speaker disguised as a picture frame, at last year's CES. Now, instead of hiding a speaker with a piece of art, Samsung worked with designer Erwan Bouroullec to make a speaker into a piece of art. According to Samsung, the Music Studio line of speakers, debuting at CES 2026, draw inspiration from the "timeless dot concept" found throughout music and art. As a musician, the Music Studio 5 reminds me of a fermata, the symbol meant to hold a note or silen … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/news/850481/two-new-wireless-samsung-speakers-for-2026-lean-into-aesthetics

Trump’s war on offshore wind faces another lawsuit

Image
Dominion Energy, an offshore wind developer and utility serving Virginia's "data center alley," filed suit against the Trump administration this week over its decision to pause federal leases for large offshore wind projects. The move puts a sudden stop to five wind farms already under construction, including Dominion's Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project. The complaint Dominion filed Tuesday alleges that a stop work order that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) issued Monday is unlawful, "arbitrary and capricious," and "infringes upon constitutional principles that limit actions by the Executive Branch." Framework announces another memory price hike — and it likely won’t be its last

The modular PC company Framework is adjusting the price of its DDR5 RAM modules once again as the cost of memory continues to surge. In an update on Wednesday , Framework said it will charge $10 per GB for 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB, with "slightly higher" prices for the 48GB and up. Framework first announced a price hike on memory earlier this month, citing "substantially higher costs" from suppliers and distributors. With this most recent increase in place, the 8GB variation jumped from $60 to $80, the 16GB option increased from $120 to $160, and the 32GB variation went from $240 to $320. The 10 best shows to stream on Amazon Prime Video from 2025

Aside from free shipping, Prime Video is the second-best perk that comes with an Amazon Prime subscription. LG teases a new chore-completing home robot

Image
LG is getting ready to take the wraps off a new robot it claims is capable of performing a "wide range" of household chores. The robot, called LG CLOiD, will make its debut at CES next month, featuring two articulated arms and five individually actuated fingers on each hand. Though we only have a description and two images showing LG CLOiD's five-fingered hands, it already seems a lot different from the two-wheeled home companion LG revealed last year, which came with a handle attached to its head rather than two arms. LG says CLOiD's motor-equipped arms operate with seven degrees of freedom , indicating a more human-like range of motion an … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/news/850242/lg-cloid-home-robot-chores-ces-2026

I re-created Google’s cute Gemini ad with my own kid’s stuffie, and I wish I hadn’t

Buddy’s in space. When your kid starts showing a preference for one of their stuffed animals, you're supposed to buy a backup in case it goes missing. I've heard this advice again and again, but never got around to buying a second plush deer once "Buddy" became my son's obvious favorite. Neither, apparently, did the parents in Google's newest ad for Gemini . It's the fictional but relatable story of two parents discovering their child's favorite stuffed toy, a lamb named Mr. Fuzzy, was left behind on an airplane. They use Gemini to track down a replacement, but the new toy is on backorder. Hollywood cozied up to AI in 2025 and had nothing good to show for it

Image
AI isn't new to Hollywood - but this was the year when it really made its presence felt. For years now, the entertainment industry has used different kinds of generative AI products for a variety of post-production processes ranging from de-aging actors to removing green screen backgrounds. In many instances, the technology has been a useful tool for human artists tasked with tedious and painstaking labor that might have otherwise taken them inordinate amounts of time to complete. But in 2025, Hollywood really began warming to the idea of deploying the kind of gen AI that's really only good for conjuring up text-to-video slop that doesn't ha … Read the full story at The Verge. source https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/848119/hollywood-film-tv-ai-2025

Anker’s beefy Laptop Power Bank has returned to its Black Friday low

Image
As you might expect, things have been relatively quiet on the deals front since Black Friday, particularly when it comes to discounts on charging accessories. Thankfully, Anker’s aptly titled Laptop Power Bank is once again on sale at Amazon and Walmart for $87.99 ($47 off), which matches the record-low price we last saw at the end of November. Anker Laptop Power Bank Where to Buy: $119.99 $87.99 at Amazon $119.99 $89.99 at Best Buy $119.99 $87.99 at Walmart Unless you’ve been living under a proverbial rock for the past several years, you’re probably aware that Anker makes an ungodly amount of charging accessories . The portable A1695 “InstaCord” has quickly become a favorite among Verge staffers , however, owing to the fact that it comes with a retractable USB-C cable and a second that doubles as a handle, both of which are bidirectional and allow for passthrough charging. The 25,000mAh / 90Wh power bank also sports a USB-A port and an additional USB-C port,...

Belkin’s camera grip power bank is a few upgrades away from being a must-have

Image
Belkin's Stage PowerGrip has shown me that I should be asking more from a wireless magnetic power bank than just boosting battery life while it hangs off the back of my phone. Its clever design adds layers of extra functionality, and the inclusion of a retractable two-way charging cable expands the number of devices you can charge without always having to remember to pack a cord. It also improves your smartphone's ergonomics when taking photos, but that's one of a few places where the PowerGrip's functionality feels disappointingly limited. The PowerGrip is much chunkier and heavier than I expected, which turned out not to be a bad thing. The AI data center build-out, as it currently stands, is dependent on two things: Nvidia chips and borrowed money. Perhaps it was inevitable that people would begin using Nvidia chips to borrow money. Honey: all the news about PayPal’s alleged scam coupon app

Image
PayPal’s Honey browser extension has been lauded for years as an easy way to find coupons online. But some are calling it a “scam” after a deep dive from YouTuber MegaLag, who accused Honey of “stealing money from influencers,” and returned one year later with a second video that says Honey targeted minors, collected data on people who never signed up for its service, and exploited small businesses. The first video shines a light mostly on Honey’s use of last-click attribution, swapping its tracking cookie in for others’ when you interact with it. The second video tracks a series of emails between Honey and small businesses that lost revenue from its use of private coupon codes and how it attempted to squeeze them to sign up as partners, as well as its approach of sponsoring YouTubers with large audiences of younger viewers, like Mr Beast. PayPal issued statements after the first video in 2024 saying that it follows “industry rules and practices” like last-click attribution. But...
